Welcome to 14 Mile Farm
14 Mile Farm tells stories in fiber, yarn and cloth, creating wearable art such as scarves, shawls, and cowls, heirloom home goods, and everyday accessories. The epitome of “slow craft,” 14 Mile Farm specializes in hand-dyed, hand-spun, and hand-woven luxury fabrics. Working with fibers from qiviut to merino to rose viscose and tencel, each textile is handwoven with love and magic. 14 Mile Farm also offers one of a kind handspun skeins and small batch colorways inspired by life in Alaska on a range of hand-dyed yarns and roving, hand carded batts, and custom-milled combed top incorporating natural and plant dyes as well as conventional indie dyeing techniques.

I have a few pieces in the “Beyond the 9-5” show in the University Art Gallery which is a celebration of the creative community and inner lives of UAF faculty and staff. The opening reception is this Friday, if you’re local you should absolutely head up to campus to see it!
Thanks @uaf.cla for supporting such a talented community!

Spent an amazing weekend in a set of workshops with @jillianmoreno at the Fairbanks Spinners and Weavers Guild: spinning singles, spin to match and all about braids!
I learned so much, spun my first singles intended to stay singles, and personally worked on woolen spinning and making thicker yarns in service of handspun sweater plans.
Thank you so much to everyone who made this happen and to Jillian for traveling all the way up here to AK to visit with us!

This is Nurture- this small collection (only two shawls) is inspired by my journey nursing my two children. While the 7300 Hours collection explores the labor involved in the feeding of young humans, this is a celebration of the tenderness, connection, trust, and intimacy between a nursing parent and their child.
Like all my pieces exploring parenthood, it is deeply grounded in my specific personal experience and reflects outward to the universal experience. While I fed my kids from my body when they were babies, tenderness, connection, trust, and intimacy can be fostered between baby and caregiver regardless of what choice or combination of choices for feeding are made.
Families use bottle, breast, pumping, or some combination for a zillion and twelve reasons - all of which are valid. My wish is that we as a society -as care providers, peers, employers, doctors, nurses, and more - can nurture parents and carers through this period of their lives just as they nurture the babies they feed and tend and love.

I’ve still got skeins of Sentani Rainbowfish from the #endangeredspecies collection in the shop: one is even Worsted, which seems so approachable and fast from my garage point halfway through a fingering weight sweater 😂 Anyone got a good worsted weight hat pattern to recommend?!?
#sentanirainbowfish #handdyedyarn #knitstagram
I’ll be moving these skeins (and maybe others? I need to ruthlessly sort!) into the shop inventory in advance of Fiber Fest. I have so very very many skeins of handspun tucked away, all with specific warps in mind, but the reality is that my speed of getting warps onto and off of the loom is slow. Working full time for the foreseeable future, I’m unlikely to significantly increase that pace and half the joy is in making the yarn anyway! Also I can always pull skeins back out of the shop to weave them into something for the shop!
All of which is to say that there are some beloved skeins I think I’m willing to give y’all a chance at claiming before I get around to using them! These are Christmas Market and Twinkle Lights by @inglenookfibers.

Weaving a set of scarves on Nurture.
This warp features a combination of Tencel, rose, viscose, peppermint viscose, and a milk protein/wool blend. They are weft – overs hand dyed yarns leftover from prior warps. This first show is being woven with a natural gray super wash lambswool.

A friend asked me today if I spin with a drop spindle and if I teach classes - which by the way :YES and not in a formal setting really but it’s a skill I’m 100% on board with sharing with everyone!
But I knew I had a tutorial, I just hadn’t posted it here! So here you are: Drop Spindling 101 courtesy of two midwinters past!

And for a bit of eye candy, here’s a few of my favorite drop spindles. Front and center is the yarn and spindle you see me starting in the tutorial: @hipstrings Peacocky spun on one of my all time favorite spindles by francesstachl.

I’m two for two, posting a weekly blog post! After a few years of good intentions and little follow through, I sat down and made a spreadsheet of prior projects that don’t yet live on the blog and convinced myself that a weekly posting schedule is actually possible.
I’m looking forward to revisiting collections with you all and hoping it helps get me back into the studio too!
Last week’s post revisited this incredible moment last winter when a piece of Unconditional was used as a hand fasting cord. Thank you so much for allowing me to bear witness to your day!

Imagine a scarf that is softer than soft, warmer than warm and cloudier than clouds! It’s not commercially viable the way that lambswool is, but qiviut from baby and yearling muskox is EVEN SOFTER than the incredibly soft and incredibly warm qiviut from adult muskox.
Mid May, I had the opportunity to visit this years new Muskox babies at LARS (the Large Animal Research Station at UAF) and I plan to visit again next month to see how they’ve grown.
The real question is if I can convince my family we need a backyard muskox herd instead of a backyard sheep flock for my local fiber dreams.

Spend some time with paints today! Many thinks to @thefarnorthquilttrailproject @somer.hahm and @the_folk_school for the chance to spend time being creative in the sunshine with amazing company. Now I’m dreaming of bigger canvases. #farnorthquilttrailproject #barnquilt #quilting #painting

I taught the girls to knit yesterday and it has me wanting to cast on with handspun! I have plenty of skeins sitting about and waiting for a project- not this one as it found a home at a holiday market last year! - but I have (long awaited) weaving plans for basically every finished skein I have. Whatever shall I do?!
